My next assignment from Young Chris came in December when he asked for some new pics in the studio for his mixtape called “Young Chris-mas” I went out there with my usual travel kit, My Nikon D80, 50mm 1.4, and 17-55mm 2.8. 2 SB800′s And A couple of my trusty Pocketwizards. I keep umbrellas and stands in the car because you never know what to expect when you get on location. So I get in there and they are layin down a couple of new tracks….Crazy. It was crazy to see him and Neef in the booth and hear some of the new tracks they were working on.

So my idea once I got there was to get him in the booth. Theres no point to be at the studio and take pics up against a wall and they didnt have any giant mixers to sit him in front of to make it seem as her was the producer/engineer. He’s Young Chris. The Rapper. Get it?
So the studio has the basic foam padding to absorb any unwanted noise made in the studio. But its this nasty yellow like the padding from the cushion of your passenger seat.

Thats not saying anything close to “Chris-mas” I need some reds or greens. Lucky for me I brought along my colored gels. So I put 1 SB800 behing the microphone stand to illuminate the room. Yay I got Red!! Now i need to light Chris because I dont wast him red also. There was a little pedestal next to him that I was able to place a SB800 on without a gel. So now I have it. Perfect Mix for the Mix Tape. It took a couple test shots to get the lights right since I left my light meter at home. I also had problems focusing because I was shooting thru glass and the recording booth was completely dark.
Here it is without the red gel:

And with:

Nikon D80 with 50mm 1.4
1/125
f/6.3
50 mm

Much better
Last minute he asked me to add some quick text to see if he can get it to the company to press the mixtape covers up. In 1 hour this is what I came up with:

Not my best work but I only had an hour. Turns out they had submitted one for him already (it was soooo wack)

A while back I was bored and was playing with the flashes. I dint have any models available so I took my son’s Spongebob and grabbed a bunch of shots. My goal was to use one light over my subject. I called my Mom in Ohio who is an aspiring photog. I asked if she wanted to get in on the exercise. Of course she was down. So we picked out a couple of toys and went at it.

The goal was:
Light the subject with 1 light without lighting the background.

Here was my setup and Final result:

Nikon D80 w/ 50mm f1.4
1/200
f/10
ISO 100

Final Shot is unedited except for sizing and taggind for web.

I’m not sure what my settings on my flash was but it was pretty low. I learned a lot from my little exercise. Sometimes when there aren’t any test models available it doesn’t hurt to have a couple toys laying around. The light falls the same on toys as it does people, just in smaller proportion.

When I was in Ohio at my Mom’s House I was playin around with my 105 vr and snapped this.

So on Mother’s Day All the fam came to the house and got all spiffy so we could make some custom cards. Why spend all that money at Hallmark with all those random poems and sayings that come close to what you really want to say but not quite. Once a year you might just find the right card that makes a family member drop a tear because its so true, but thats like winning the lottery. So being one of those people that dislikes card shopping, I figured that mom would like a card made from scratch. Whats so different from the days of construction paper, safety scissors, elmers glue and colorful pipe cleaners? Same thing to me. I just have a bigger canvas now.

Enough blah blah here are the pics in order from youngest to oldest.

Jordan ( hurry up and get this over with so I can play rockband )

Sorry I Didn’t make the cut this time. Maybe next post. Thanks to the fam for being patient and energetic, I had fun with these pics.

I know I took these pics a while ago but since i just started the blog I’d Show you anyway. Everybody meet Ciji Michelle-Ciji Michelle meet everybody. I had just bought this blue background paper from Calumet the week before and Ciji called me for some new pics. The day she called me to set up the shoot, I actually came home with my new Nikon D3 from Cameras Etc in Delaware.

I used the AlienBees ABR800 ringflash above triggered by pocketwizards and a SB800 on the ground with a shoot thru umbrella.

Heres a couple keepers from the shoot. Check out some more photos on my Flicker Gallery HERE.
Also check out some more of Ciji on her Myspace page.

Hi, I’m Greg. This is my blog. I’ve spent that last couple years browsing the web for inspiration and techniques to make my pictures better. I spend a couple hours a day looking at forums, blogs and anything else Google throws at me in my random searches. Personally I’ve leaned alot from other people displaying what and how they do what they do. Hopefully my blog can inspire or teach others or even just give the casual browser something interesting to look at for a couple minutes a day.
